Vasti or medicated enema is the most effective panchkarmatherapy which is performed only on prescription by an ayurvedic physician in conditions of vata predominance. It is performed to flush the loosened doshas out through the intestinal tract.Its effectiveness is unmatched asmedicines directly reach the bowel without enzymatic actions. That is why it is performed with many other therapies too and is considered “half the treatment”, for many types of diseases.
Depending upon the type of medication, vasti can be Sneha or Kashaya vasti.
Sneha Vasti (Oil enema)
When vasti is given with medicated oils/ghritam to nourish and lubricate the body, it is termed as sneha vasti.
Indication: Vata disorders
Objective of Sneha vasti
The main position of Vata dosha is Pakwashaya (large intestine), so sneha vasti is the main therapy for all vata disorders such as constipation, neurological ailments, paralysis, urinary & bowel incontinence,flatulence, lower backache, sciatica, arthritis, gout, and rheumatism etc.
Procedure of Sneha Vasti
Patient is advised to take light food and oil massage before the procedure. In a comfortable lying position that is neither too high nor too low, patient is instructed to be on his left side, folding his right thigh and extending the other. The nozzle of vasti yantra and anus is lubricated with oil. Then the vasti yantra filled with medicated oil is introduced into the rectum and medicated oil is released in a precise manner. After this, patient should lye facing upward and gentle massage should be given on abdomen, hand and feet. Normally within 3 hours patient pass stool with oil.
