Ayurvedic Abhyangam or oil massage therapy is a holistic healing and nourishing procedure that detoxifies the physical, mental and emotional toxins along with pacifying vitiated vata and other doshas. The procedure is performed using medicated oils to nourish the tissues, relax the muscles and calm the mind.
Ayurvedic physician carefully examines the patient’s body type and dosha imbalance to decide the herbs or essential oils for abhyang.

Abhyangam is performed by trained therapists under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician and lasts for almost 45 min to 60 min. As per the patients’ need, specific oils are prescribed by physicians based on the prakruti (body constitution) and vikruti of patient.
The procedure is performed after complete digestion of the previous meal. Patient is advised to void his bowels and bladder and be in minimum clothes during the treatment. Warm medicated oil is applied over the body or on desired parts by synchronized strokes.

Abhyang is followed by a brief resting period and swedan or hot water bath as advised by the ayurvedic physician.
